Gastrointestinal submucosal tumor (SMT) is a general term for a variety of lesions. Because gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), which are considered malignant tumors, are more frequent in the stomach, the diagnosis of GIST (or not) is most important when SMTs are detected. However, in addition to tumors originating from the submucosa or the muscular layer, some SMTs are found to be epithelial tumors that have grown from the deep mucosal layer toward the submucosa. Therefore, it is necessary for gastrointestinal doctors to understand the frequency and characteristics of SMT in each organ and to be familiar with the imaging diagnosis of each lesion detected as an SMT. Endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasonography, and contrast-enhanced CT are important imaging modalities for SMT. In this paper, we discuss the different diagnostic methods and strategies for SMT diagnosis.
