In recent years, sedation has become increasingly important in upper endoscopic procedures. Although sedation is important in endoscopic procedures, sedation carries the risk of respiratory depression, hypotension, and other complications. According to the report of the 6th national survey by the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES), sedation is the most common cause of complications in the preparation of gastrointestinal endoscopic examinations and procedures. Sedation guidelines issued by JGES recommend continuous monitoring of the patient's level of consciousness, respiratory and circulatory status. With the development of upper gastrointestinal endoscopic examinations and procedures, the time required to perform these procedures has increased. Therefore, benzodiazepines and analgesics such as pethidine hydrochloride are used in combination in many cases. This article describes the basics of endoscopic sedation and how to manage complications caused by sedation.
