This paper provides an explanation of insertion techniques and related basic knowledge for colonoscopy. Colonoscopy is a critical medical procedure performed for the early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer and polyps, playing a significant role in preventive medicine. The paper discusses essential aspects for conducting safe and effective examinations, including preparation before the procedure, obtaining informed consent, managing patients on antithrombotic therapy, the importance of bowel preparation, scope selection, and the use of sedatives and analgesics. Insertion techniques such as the “axial shortening method” and “right turn shortening,” which are particularly important when navigating the sigmoid colon, are emphasized. Minimizing patient discomfort while performing the procedure efficiently is crucial. Endoscopists must ensure thorough preparation and safety management throughout each process and adopt a flexible approach tailored to the condition of each patient.
