Stent grafting for abdominal aortic aneurysms has become widely used as a minimally invasive treatment, but it poses the potential problem of consumptive coagulopathy due to an endoleak. Bleeding and delayed wound healing due to coagulation factor XIII (F13) deficiency have also been attracting attention. We have treated two patients who experienced postoperative bleeding after flap surgery for groin surgical wound dehiscence following stent grafting for an abdominal aortic aneurysm; a 91-year-old female and a 74-year-old male. Both patients were found to be F13-deficient, and hemostasis was achieved with F13 supplementation. The cause of the patientsʼ F13 deficiency was most likely consumptive deficiency due to the endoleak after stent grafting. Prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) tests do not examine F13 deficiency. Our search of the relevant literature identified no reports suggesting an association between stent grafting and F13 deficiency, and caution is warranted in similar cases.
