イギリスの整形外科医Hugh Owen Thomas（1834 〜1891年）による“Thomas test”は，1878年に 出版された彼の著書，『Diseases of the Hip, Knee, and Ankle Joints and their treatment：By a New and Efficient Method』で初めて記載されている。化膿性股関節炎の早期診断に有用である方法 として紹介されたのが最初であり，坐骨神経痛などと鑑別するためのテストとして紹介されている。
