【Purpose】The aim of the current study was to clarify mothers' motivations for continuing breastfeeding by surveying narratives of breastfeeding mothers.

【Methods】This was a qualitative and descriptive study, which included nine mothers who continued breastfeeding for 2-6 months after delivery. We performed data collection by conducting semi-structured interviews, which were recorded with the approval of the participants, transcribed verbatim, and inductively analyzed. The data were coded based on the research theme, and the codes were then divided into categories and subcategories depending the level of abstraction.

【Results】As a result of our analysis, seven categories and 30 subcategories were extracted. The subjects expressed that they gradually felt the joy of being a mother, and accepted breastfeeding as a natural rhythm. They also had created an environment where they could focus on breastfeeding based on their breastfeeding experiences to that point. The mothers reported that their breastfeeding experience further encouraged the continuation of breastfeeding, resulting in a realization of the benefits of breastfeeding and a sense of comfort for themselves. They also mentioned that they were helped by support systems that assisted them while respecting their desire to breastfeed.

【Conclusions】The mothers' motivations for continuing breastfeeding were as follows: (1) the joy of being a mother to a newborn child; (2) the natural desire to breastfeed; (3) learning about breastfeeding through the practical experience; and (4) a support system that helps mothers who want to breastfeed their children. These results indicate that there is a need for the development of support systems that focus on the relationship between mothers and children as well as improvement of their breastfeeding technique.
