【Purpose】This study aims to clarify the feelings that mothers have about the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) handbook at various times during pregnancy, and childcare.

【Methods】The research design was a qualitative descriptive study, with a study period from July 2018 to February 2019. The study population consisted of 8 mothers of three-year-old children who filled in the free space in the MCH handbook. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews based on an interview guide. The analysis began with verbatim transcripts of the interviews, which were then categorized according to the research theme.

【Results】Mothers who received the MCH handbook felt that they feel more like becoming mothers. They also felt that the MCH handbook would "allow them to feel the invisible fetus," "allow them to pass the baton to their children," "become an irreplaceable and special record," and "allow them to raise their children in their own way even if they didn't have much to write in the MCH handbook.

【Conclusions】It was found that having the MCH handbook in their hands gave them the joy of being able to become mothers, including the joy of having proof of pregnancy and the peace of mind of knowing that they could give birth. They feel that the depth of affection from mother to child, their own experience of childbirth and child rearing, and the thoughts they want to pass on to their children, would be passed on to children In addition, the mothers reported that the experience of becoming a mother is very precious, and they have a special attachment to the handbook. They felt that they were raising their children in their own way, even if the amount of entries in the handbook was small, suggesting that the number of entries in the MCH handbook cannot be used to measure the state of child rearing.
