Objective

This study is to elucidate the relationship between unmarried women's knowledge of reproduction and their life plan and discuss the role of health education for unmarried women.

Material and Method

A questionnaire survey was conducted against 428 unmarried women in Tokyo (age: 18-34 years) about their knowledge of reproduction and life plan, during October to November 2008.

Result and Discussion

The valid response was retrieved from 241 women (response rate: 56.3%) and the respondents' mean age was 27.5 years (SD 3.6). The mean correct answer score about the knowledge of reproduction was 4.3 on a scale of one to ten (SD 2.6). Those who have their own life plan gained a higher mean score of knowledge of reproduction, and a significant positive correlation was observed between these two factors. Women's thought about their life plan is considered to lead to their interest in reproduction and, therefore, necessity of health education was suggested because it will become a good opportunity for unmarried women to think of their own life plan.

Conclusion

It was revealed that in unmarried women knowledge of reproduction is relatively low. Providing unmarried women with correct knowledge of reproduction will enhance their sense of value about own sex and that will be meaningful at the health education of infertility prevention.
