A Study of Mothers' Difficulties in the Care of Children with Atopic Dermatitis

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to clarify the difficulties of mothers who have "AD infants" (Atopic Dermatitis infants), for providing appropriate care to them.

[Methods] Objectives: twenty-eight mothers with AD infants(range 6M-47M)and seventy-two mothers with normal infants participated.

Data Collection: All of the mothers completed the 2 questionnaires.

 1. Japan Parenting Stress Index(78 items)

 2. The original questionnaire about home care

Twenty-six mothers with AD infants answered a semi-structured interview.

[Findings]

 There were no significant differences in the two groups of mothers.

 Mothers with AD infants had difficulties with Itch Control, Food management and getting good sleep. They were divided into five types of relationships between mothers' competence for home care of AD infants and the difficulties which were related to Child-rearing.
