Abstract

The purpose of this study was to survey the working situation in the graduates at our Department of Nursing and to obtain the data enabling the evaluation of our nursing education over the period of about 30 years. We asked 978 alumni among the total of 1153 up to March 1998 to answer a questionnaire. 462 alumni completed the answer sheet with the recovery rate of 47.2%. The results were as follows:

Employment rate was 93.3% immediately after graduation and 82.5% at the time of the survey. 89.2% of those who worked were full time workers. The rate of nurses as the kind of occupation ranged from 65 to 75% immediately after graduation. Employment as a public health nurse was relatively high in the graduates from 1989 to 1993. The rate of employment as nurse, public health nurse, and teaching staff were 40%, 40% and 20%, respectively .The rate of employment as sites was about 76% for medical institutions immediately after graduation, decreasing to about 39% at the time of the survey. The rate of health center, education and research institution increased over the years after graduation. Total period of work averaged 8.26 ± 6.40 years. Mean period of work was less than 4 years in 60% and 4 to 7 years in 20% of the total graduates. Work period of less than 4 years immediately after graduation accounted for 70% of all nurses and 40% for public health nurses. 60% of the graduates were employed continuously from the time of graduation to the present survey. Reemployment rate was about 25%. The survey excluding the graduates of work period of less than 4 years showed that about 25% of the graduates never left the jobs and about 60% resigned the jobs 1 to 2 times. The main reason for the resignation was individual family problems. The labor condition and human relationship had little influence on the resignation.
