<Abstract>

 As footwear is a major cause of falls, the present study aimed to clarify the effect of footwear type on gait in order to obtain basic data about footwear. Subjects were ten healthy female university students. Each subject's gait cycle variables were measured using a posturography device during a ten-meter walk test and a ten-meter walk test at maximum speed. Furthermore, each subject's centroid trajectory and the waveform of the ground/floor reaction force were measured during a step made at a natural speed. The results indicated that slippers and pumps had significantly lower values for the gait cycle variables than other types of footwear. In addition, the highest maximum ground/floor reaction force was observed for pumps; however, the centroid trajectory during a step was smaller(p<0.05), and there was more distortion in the waveform of the ground/floor reaction force. When walking at a comfortable speed(ten-meter walk test) or at maximum speed, slippers and pumps did not show a significant difference in step length/walking rate, suggesting that adjusting the step length while walking at an intentionally accelerated speed is difficult in slippers and pumps. Further study clarifying the effect of the material and design of footwear on gait is required in order to obtain more basic data for fall prevention.
