Abstract

We investigated the music application or use in the school infirmary, for the purpose of exploring its usefulness by means of questionnaires. The survey was carried out for 152 yogo-teachers(school nurses) of high schools and of special-support schools within the prefecture "A" in Japan. We got 97 answers out of 152 teachers and its collection rate was 63.8%.

As a result, there were few teachers(18.6%) who have experienced to apply music in the school infirmary. The most available equipments used for playing the music were radio cassette recorders and the best preferred music was the classical music. Moreover, 83.3% of yogo-teachers reported the useful effect of music application in the school infirmary, mentally and physically. "Feeling relaxed" and "bodily relaxation" were the most conspicuous effects they mentioned, as well as effects like prompting high school students to have a conversation, caring for students who have loss experiences (either bereavement or separation from a parent)and making students emotionally stable. These effects were also recognized both for students themselves and for school staffs other than yogoteachers.

However, statistically significantly few yogo-teachers(18.6%) listened music for themselves alone in the school infirmary, because of having an uneasy conscience in consideration of students coming in and other school staffs, in spite of appreciating the benefit of music for refreshment, healing and relaxing.

In summary, music application in a school infirmary is considered to be much of help to make up the environment of the infirmary in good condition, mentally and physically, for all students and yogo-teachers as well as other school staffs.
