An investigation was conducted to clarify the required support needs and the state of readiness during a natural disaster of families with a disabled child living in the neighborhood of nursing colleges and universities. Information was obtained from six research volunteers for this purpose. All were full-time domestic engineers who have a child who is a disabled adult male who needs a wheelchair for movement. Two subjects had a tracheotomy. The main reason for support during a natural disaster is that more than one person is required during wheelchair movement to help carrying the many nursing care products that must accompany the subject. Foodstuff, liquid and disposable diapers were already made available. There was the expectation that neighboring colleges and universities should prepare the necessary nursing care goods and other daily essentials and also provide human and material aid, not only in one specified place. The investigation also showed that links with welfare organizations and health care professionals as well as the development of a trusting relationship with such families were also important factors.
