This study aims to reveal the opinions of DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance Team) nurses regarding necessary advanced skills and activities, and the development of those, for casualties who are marked with a black-tag (unsalvageable people and deceased people).

A questionnaire was sent to 1,023 DMAT nurses in Japan, with 651 questionnaires returned (response rate: 63.6%). The survey results are as follows.

1. Regarding knowledge and skills for the activities: The items identified by many respondents as necessary are “basic knowledge of triage” and “skill in determining vital signs”.

2. Regarding useful studies and training for advancement: The items identified by many respondents as useful are “grief care for the survivors of the deceased”, “treatment for the deceased”, and “stress management”.

3. Regarding stressful situations: The items identified by many respondents as stressful are “encountering the remains of acquaintances”, “inexperience”, and “the great number of human remains”.

Therefore, I think what are necessary are skill in determining vital signs, and basic knowledge of triage. And because to mark with the black-tag in a disaster scene, and to do for black-tagged casualties, are most stressful, I think it is necessary for the nurses to have an appropriate study background and training.
