Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to reveal the state of mind and anchor-points of shortterm hospitalized children in environmental transition from hospital to home, and the holistic state of each child, with trying the write and draw technique.

In this research, observations and drawing and writing tools were utilized to investigate subjects. The subjects were 2 operated school children. Investigations were conducted 4 or 5 times over a 2-week or 2-month period from hospitalization until after discharge, it depended on their conditions. Data was analyzed holistically referring to psychological methods.

As a result, the following conclusions were made:

1. The state of each environmental transition is personal and individual.

2. Hospitalized children perform integration (organization) using familiar items, transitional objects (e.g., media games, dolls) as anchor-points.

3. Drawing and writing tools are useful for pediatric nursing, as observation tools for understanding the mental state of vulnerable children.
