Connecting Nursing Education in Asia:China, Korea, Malaysia and Japan
Hamidah H.(Department of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine and University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre)
Like many other countries, Malaysia too has its own historical background and nursing development. Nursing in Malaysia was a heritage from the British Empire since the year 1800, with the formation of the East India Company, nurses were brought in mainly from Gujerat, India to carry out nursing activities in Malaya during that time. The first schools of nursing were established in 1946 and were situated in Pinang Island, Johore Bharu and Selangor and schools were headed by English tutors. The education for nurses at that time was more of “on the job training” where lectures and training were provided by matrons, sisters and doctors.
