A single-subject study using a new "ATD-W-intervention type" design was carried out to compare the effectiveness of musical and non-musical activities in inducing active behavior in an elderly female suffering from severe Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Independent variables included a regular recreational program and a folk-ballad and drum performance. Dependent variables included participatory behavior and facial expressions. The dependent variables fluctuated during the first half of the musical activities, but in the latter half a stable gradient of ascent was seen, thus showing the effectiveness of the musical activities. The results indicate various possible benefits of musical activities as well as the effectiveness of the "ATD-W-intervention type" design.
