The purpose of this study is to clarify whether there are effects on the disabled elderly after they take part in recreational activities. 37 disabled, elderly people were investigated during a 1-year study period. The study involved Hasegawa's dementia rating scales of revised (HDS-R), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and Visual Analogue Scale of Happiness (VAS-H).
Unlike the group which participated in recreation with the greatest frequency, the low-frequency group showed significant decreases in the ratio of HDS-R and VAS-H. With regard to the disabled elderly who reside at nursing homes, these results clearly indicate that a higher frequency of participation in recreational activities is effective in the prevention of HDS-R and VAS-H decrease.
