The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of individual occupational therapy on improvement of the social life disabilities in chronic schizophrenic inpatients. Thirty-six chronic schizophrenic inpatients participated in this study. Participants attended the individual occupational therapy, which was based on the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), once a week for five months.

The social life disabilities were evaluated using the Rehabilitation Evaluation of Hall and Baker (REHAB), both before and after those interventions. Participants showed significant improvement in "the total General Behavior score" and scores of "Social Activities" , "Self Care" , and "Community Skill" of the REHAB. The results of our study suggested that individual occupational therapy using the COPM may be useful to improve the social life disabilities in chronic schizophrenic inpatients.
