A patient with severe facial burns was treated for functional disturbance of the opening of the mouth (microstomia) using both a tissue expander and a new orthosis at the affected area.

The tissue expander in the vestibule of the mouth was effective at stretching the skin of the cheek, and allowed the patient to resume activities such as eating and brushing of the teeth.

Continuous horizontal skin stretching using the new orthosis was more effective at maintaining and improving the width of the mouth than intermittent skin stretching.

This paper describes the development of the new orthosis, the device itself and how it differs from former approaches.
