In this study, we analyzed the degree of independence according to basic activity of daily living (ADL : eating, toileting and dressing) in children and adults with cerebral palsy who showed spastic quadriplegia and mental retardation. Multivariate analysis (quantification methods of the first, second and third types) including mental age, postural reflex, sex, age and environment as parameters was used in the analysis. The results were as follows. Independence in ADL was determined by mental development and postural reflex. In particular, the parachute reaction of the upper extremities was necessary for independence in ADL. Additionally, a mental age of over 12 months was necessary for eating and one of over 3 years for toileting and dressing.
