This report summarizes the use of oral applicances in clinical treatments for dysphagia and speech disorders. The oral appliances used were an obturator prosthesis, a velopharyngeal prosthesis, a palatal lift prosthesis (PLP), and a palatal augmentation prosthesis (PAP). These compensate the organ defects in maxilla, soft palate and tongue, and functional impairments such as speech and swallowing for patients with cerebrovascular and neurogenic diseases. Prosthodontic treatment with an oral appliance also acts as a training apparatus, which enhances sensory input. Since prosthodontic interventions are non-invasive, it is anticipated that their use will increase and they will become a routine part of therapy for swallowing and speech disorders. We also note that during rehabilitation for dysphagia and speech disorders, co-operation between dentists and speech-language-hearing therapists is crucial.
