[Objective] To investigate the safety of initial pneumoperitoneum created with a Veress needle in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for morbid obesity. Methods: The present study investigated the success rate of prior pneumoperitoneum and the incidence of pneumoperitoneum-related complications in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy performed at our hospital. [Results] One hundred thirty-eight patients underwent the procedure between June 2014 and September 2020. Eleven surgeons performed needle insertion under the supervision of an experienced colleague. The success rate of prior pneumoperitoneum was 99.3% (137/138 cases). No complications, such as damage caused by needle insertion, were observed. [Conclusion] Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for morbid obesity using a Veress needle was safe and readily feasible if performed with the guidance of an experienced surgeon.
