  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We reviewed the endoscopic papillary balloon dilation (EPBD) for removal of bile duct stones. EST (endoscopic sphincterotomy) is an established procedure for removal of bile duct stones, however, there has been some concern about late complications. EST causes the permanent loss of sphincter function, which is associated with chronic biliary infection. This may be a serious problem especially in young patients. In our series of 326 patients with common bile duct stones treated by EPBD, the bile duct clearance was achieved in 322 patients without hemorrage.
