International collaborative research involves researchers from different countries or regions who must comply with various laws and regulations. The differences between domestic multicenter research and international collaborative research are that the relevant laws and regulations are somewhat complicated and that communication must be carried out in English. When conducting international collaborative research, Japanese researchers must comply with applicable Japanese laws and guidelines, as well as those of the counterpart country. Japanese ethics guidelines applicable to observational research and some interventional research were revised in March 2022 in line with the revised Act on the Protection of Personal Information. The revised ethics guidelines brought the use of personal data for academic research purposes under the protections consistent with the scope of the Act. This revision gave legal protection for data transfer between the EU or the UK and Japan under the GDPR. Given the highly legal nature of personal data use and compliance with regulations, it is important to make a clinical research contract or similar agreement between institutions conducting collaborative research. Investigators are recommended to consult the department in charge at the academic research organization.
