Although several animal studies have investigated the neurotoxic or neuroprotective effects of anesthetics during the neonatal period or infancy, inconsistencies between their findings and clinical outcomes are not fully understood. Recent human clinical trials report no adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes even if children less than 3 years of age were exposed to a single short-term general anesthetic. However, it is unknown how multiple or long exposures affects children. Anesthesiologists have to be engaged in pediatric anesthesia with a long-term perspective for the child's future, while we take advantage of short-acting anesthetics recently approved and expect an increase in the number of reports about the neuroprotective effect of anesthetics on a child's developing brain.
