The kidney is a target organ for collagen vascular diseases. In the ICU, the frequency of intrinsic AKI due to multiple factors is relatively high and may include renal involvement by collagen vascular diseases. A urinalysis is essential for intensivists to identify the injured parts of the nephrons. Based on this information, imaging studies and renal biopsies are obtained. When identifying the cause of AKI, intensivists should pay attention to renal lesions associated with collagen vascular diseases and their treatment and cormorbities, especially, infection-related glomerulonephritis, which may clinically and pathologically mimic lupus nephritis and anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated glomerulonephritis. The exclusion of these conditions is essential. In this article, we aim to discuss renal involvement associated with systemic lupus erythematosus, anti-phospholipid syndrome, systemic vasculitis, systemic sclerosis and Sjögren syndrome.
