International guidelines including the Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines have improved the survival rate of patients with sepsis, while the number of patients suffering postintensive care syndrome (PICS) is increasing. According to a recent large observational study on patients hospitalized with severe sepsis, having lived fully functional and independent daily lives prior to hospitalization, one-third died within six months, one-third had PICS, and only one-third had good functional outcomes. Although the mechanism of diseases associated with PICS including ICU-acquired weakness and sepsis-associated delirium, are being clarified, definitive therapy has not yet been established due to a lack of strong evidence. The treatment goal for patients with sepsis should be high-quality intensive care including early resuscitation and early rehabilitation, which could potentially prevent PICS. In this article, PICS associated with sepsis is reviewed.
