INTRODUCTION-Although present humans at birth, the presence of HgbA1c was not known until recently. This hemoglobin was first noted in 1958, but it was not until 1968 that extensive studies on HgbA1c were begun by Rahbar of Tehran University, Iran. It was first thought to be an abnormal hemoglobin in diabetics ; thus, its original name of "diabetic hemoglobin". Actually, Hgb A1c has been recognized to be a minor hemoglobin component present in all people. Furthermore, it has been shown that Hgb A1c belongs to a group of hemoglobins called glycosylated hemoglobins*1, fast hemoglobins, or glycohemoglobins designated as Hgb A1 subgroups A-E. The component in greatest concentration is Hgb A1c. Normal adult hemoglobin components as determined by electrophoresis are : Hgb A (90-95 percent) and Hgb A2, F, and A1 (5-10 percent). The pattern observed with these components is from fastest to slowest : Hgb A1A, A1B, and A1c migrating with Hgb F, Hgb A2, and Hgb A.
