Adipose tissue, which is energy-storing and endocrine organ, plays important roles in body homeostasis. Systemic adipose tissue is involved in the pathophysiology of obesity and metabolic syndrome, including insulin resistance, arterial sclerosis, ischemic heart disease and cerebral stroke. To investigate these critical issues, we developed adipose tissue-organotypic culture system. By application of this method, we also established the adipose tissue-based model for analyzing the roles of adipose tissue in the homeostasis and metabolic syndrome. Here we review these items, hoping that these models will contribute to the development of prevention and treatment strategy of both obesity and metabolic syndrome.
