The hypothesis that prostate cancer develops from the prostate cancer stem cells (PCSCs) has been proposed. It is also believed that even after androgen deprivation therapy, PCSCs can survive because of androgen independency and re-grow to castrate-resistant prostate cancer, later. Thus, identified prostate stem cell and PCSCs should be therapeutically new targets for prostate cancer. This review presents stem cell markers including CD133 to identify prostate stem cells and PCSCs in mice and humans.
