Genome-wide association study (GWAS) reported from Center for Genomic Medicine, RIKEN for the first time in the world has now become the world standard method to search for the genes associated with multifactorial diseases and drug reactions. In general, the genes with large effect sizes tend to be in low frequencies and those with small effect sizes tend to be in high frequencies;however, the genes associated with pharmacogenomics are exceptions, and useful for the prediction of drug reactions. Although the genes associated with common diseases are with small effect sizes, they are likely to be useful as the possible targets for new drug development. The genomic variations associated with clinical laboratory tests are likely to be useful to establish the system of personalized clinical tests.
