Mycoplasma pneumoniae has several peculiar biological characteristics distinct from other bacteriae;extrinsic genes such as plasmids do not function within M. pneumoniae cells, and M. pneumoniae has only one operon for ribosome synthesis. While M. pneumoniae has only limited cytotoxicity involving excessive production of superoxides within infected cells, immunological abnormalities elicited by its membrane components or cellular components play a major role in its pathogenicity. Therefore, in M. pneumoniae infection, drug-resistance of the bacterium in itself does not necessarily lead to serious clinical threat, which is a quite unique aspect different from drug-resistance in other bacteriae.
