　本邦においてバンコマイシン耐性腸球菌(VRE)は確実に増加しており，感染が拡大する前に対策を講じる必要がある．VREには一見，感受性菌と見間違えるものがあり，通常の検査では判定を誤る可能性があるので注意が必要である．VRE保菌者は多くが腸管内に保菌するが，通常の便培養では検出されず，発見がしばしば遅れる．さらに，手指衛生の不備や手袋・エプロンなどの個人防護用具が適切に使用されないと，VREは医療従事者の手指を介して容易にほかの患者に拡がるため，早期発見および早期隔離が対策の基本となる．

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci(VRE)have gradually emerged as important nosocomial pathogens in Japan. Transmission of VRE can occur through direct contact with colonised or infected patients or through indirect contact via the hands of health-care workers or via contaminated patient care equipment or environmental surfaces. Control measures aimed at reducing the influx and the incidence of VRE infection in hospitals include wide and targeted surveillance cultures and immediate isolation of VRE-positive patients.
