Lp-PLA2 is a phospholipase A2 that is also called platelet-activating factor(PAF)acetylhydrolase. PAF and PAF-like oxidized phospholipids play important roles in thrombosis and atherosclerosis. These biologically active phospholipids are substrates of PAF acetylhydrolase. PAF acetylhydrolase is bound to LDL and HDL in plasma. In hypercholesteremic plasma, PAF acetylhydrolase is also detected in Lp(a). Plasma PAF acetylhydrolase activity is increased in atherosclerotic diseases and it may be considered anti-atherogenic. Genetic deficiency of PAF acetylhydrolase is found in about 4% of Japanese individuals, and this may be related to a genetic risk for atherosclerotic diseases.
