  • Look Inside

137 patients who had been registered as victims of thalidomide in Japan were examined from the otolaryngological viewpoint. 91 of the 137 cases had abnormalities of the external ear and /or cranial nerves such as abducens nerve, facial nerve and statoacoustic nerve. 59 of these 91 cases were associated with deformities of the extremities, while the remaining 16 had no otolaryngological defects besides malformation of the extremities. 79 of the 137 patients had sensorineural, conductive or mixed deafness, bilaterally or unilaterally. It was found that thalidomideinduced sensorineural deafness is characterized by high tone loss which begins from 8 kHz and extends to the lower frequency range.
