緒　言

　サリドマイドthalidomide （α-phthal-imido-glutarimide）剤は催眠鎮静剤として，また胃腸薬として，わが国では1958年1月20日から1962年9月13日までの4年8カ月間発売されていた。これを妊娠初期に服用した母親から生れた特有の四肢奇形および聴力障害があるものをサリドマイド胎芽病thalidomide embryopathyまたはWied-mann症候群と呼んでいる。サリドマイド胎芽病の眼症状についてのわが国での報告は植村らの4例と小暮らの1例のみであり，系統的な研究は行われていない。

　今回，厚生省サリドマイド胎芽病認判定委員会で認定された303名のサリドマイド胎芽病のうち89名を眼科的に検査し，興味ある知見を得たので報告したい。

We conducted a thorough ophthalmological examination in 89 children affected by thalido-mide embryopathy. The ages of the patients ranged from 9 to 19 years. We detected various ocular defects in 44 cases (49.6%).

Microphthalmos and uveal coloboma were typically found in limb deformities, while Duane's syndrome was associated with hearing impairments. Duane's syndrome was present in 29 cases. Binocular involvement and impairment of ocular movement both inward and outward (type III) featured this syndrome. Crocodile tears (24 cases) and facial nerve palsy (20 cases)were also frequent accompanying conditions.
