The clinical and diagnostic value of total serum IgE in the nasal allergy group (69 patients) and asymptomatic group (100 subjects) was evaluated. The total serum IgE level was measured by RIST or PRIST, and the specific IgE's against house dust (H 1), a mite, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (DP), Anthoxanthum odoratum, a mugwort Artemisiaindica, Alternaria tenuis, cat and Japanese cedar were measured. The results were as follows.

1. RIST and PRIST showed a good correlation in IgE concentrations 100U/ml or more but a poor correlation in IgE concentrations of less than 100U/ml.

2. The total serum IgE level was 152.37± 165.07U/ml (mean ± S.E. ) for the asymptomatic group. This level tended to reach a peak of 0~50 U/ ml followed by gradual decline.

The nasal allergy group showed a higher level of 307.38 ± 274.16U/ml but did not show a normal distribution.

3. In the asymptomatic group, many subjects also showed positive RAST reactions.

4. The total serum IgE level correlated with the number of RAST positive allergens or the total RAST score.
