A 56-year-old male complained of sore throat, earache, hard of hearing of the right ear and vertigo. Virological and otoneurological studies were performed, and antibody titer against varicella-zoster virus were 256 on the 21th hospital day. Severe sensorineural hearing loss of the right ear, spontaneous horizontal nystagmus toward the left side and rotatory positional nystagmus, disturbance of consciousness were detected. The diagnosis of labyrinthitis and mild encephalitis caused by varicella-zoster virus was made. Interferon (1 to 3 million IU/day) was given intrathecally to this patient. About one week later, the symptoms were abolished and no side effect was observed. Intrathecal administration of interferon seemed one of the best therapies for viral encephalitis in this case.
