  • Look Inside

The vestibular functions in seventeen patients with vestibuloneuronitis were investigated.

Spontaneous nystagmus under Frenzel glasses and caloric response were chosen as indicators of the vestibular function. The caloric response is usually abolished completely in this disease and the severe paretic horizontal nystagmus toward the unaffected side exists at the onset of the disease.

Eleven out of 17 patients, the caloric response was recovered and the spontaneous nystagmus disappeared within one month. The vestibular symptoms such as vertigo and dizziness were also disappeared within one month. The other six patients showed no recovery of caloric response and exhibited spontaneous nystagmus during 5-14 months, and their vestibular symptoms continued.

Thus it was speculated that vestibuloneuronitis may be differentiated into two types according to different pathogenesis.
