  • Look Inside

Three patients had intracranial extensions of the tumors in the middle cranial fossa from the adjacent structures of the base of the skull. Histologically, these primary tumors were confirmed to be embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the ear, lymphoepithelioma of the nasopharynx, and undifferentiated carcinoma of the sphenoid sinus.

On neurological examinations, there was trigeminal and abducens nerve palsy in all three patients, including deafness in two and facial palsy in one. Radiologic examination disclosed erosion of the base of the skull with a contrast-enhanced tumor, especially in the regions of the foramina lacerum and ovale. The lesions were also confirmed by radioisotope bone scan. These facts strongly suggested that the tumors extended into the intracranial space through these foramina.
