  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Forty-nine children (56 ears) with chronic otitis media operated in 1975-1979 were reviewed. Tympanoplasty was performed in 44 ears (75%) and the success rate of tympanoplasty in children was almost equal to that of tympanoplasty in adults.

Cholesteatoma was found in 22 ears (39%). Cholesteatoma spreaded rapidly in children, as has often been discussed. However, complications were found in small number of cases (only 2 cases). Cholesteatomas in the marginal posterior area (I-S type) and that in the marginal area extending to the attic were larger in number than that located in the attic area (M-type) in our sereies.

Tympanoplasty should be indicated to chronic otitis media with or without cholesteatoma in children same as to that in adult.
