  • Look Inside

In cases of malignant tumors, when the gastrointestinal feeding is inadequate or impossible, it isnecessary to provide nutrients parenterally.

In the past, esophagostomy and gastrostomy were recommended in patients with head and neck tumors prior to or at the time of surgery.

Recently, the applicable approach for providing adequate parenteral nutrition became possible to infuse concentrated solution "hypertonic (20-50%) solution of dextrose" into large venous channels such as the superior vena cava or inferior vena cava.

Intravenous hyperalimentation was proved efficient in the treatment of more than 63 patients for about 40 months at the ENT Clinic, Central Hospital of Aomori.

Weight gain and satisfactory wound healing were observed in the majority of patients.
