  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

To prevent allergic reaction of local anesthetics, the intradermal tests were performed prior to surgical operations.

The results of intradermal test on 200 patients, 130 men (9~83 yrs. old) and 70 women (12~89 yrs. old), were as follows:

Of 200 patients, 36 (18%) had positive skin reaction (Novocain), and 2 (1%) to Carbocaine (mepivacaine).

In 16 patients who once had experienced allergic reaction to drugs, 3 patients (19%) were positive to procaine, and 1 (6%) to Carbocaine.

In 14 patients who have nasal allergy, 6 patients (43%) were positive to procaine, and none to Carbocaine.

Local anesthetics should cautiously be used after a thoughtful and inclusive history taking even if the intradermal test is negative, particulaly if the patient is constitutionally hypersensitive to drugs.
