  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Three autopsy cases of nasal and palatal reticulum cell sarcoma (Kirikae) were presented. The patients were treated under the clinical diagnosis of Wegener's granulomatosis (2 cases) and granuloma gangrenescens (one) respectively, and showed poor clinical courses. All these three had the histopathological features characterized by ; 1) Proliferation of atypical lymphoreticular cells with cellular polymorphism. 2) Remarkable tendency of necrosis in the individual tumor cells and the infiltrated tissues, especially in autopsy materials. 3) Less frequent mitotic figures. 4) Leukemia-like infiltration, and 5) Phagocytic activity of tumor cells.

Each case was compatible to reticulo-endothelial sarcoma of Walton. It is rather easy to differentiate these cases from Wegener's granulomatosis by microscopic observation of surgical specimens.

Experience of further clinical cases providing immunological examinations and detailed morphological investigations will be necessary to elucidate the nature of the so-called nasal reticulum cell sarcoma (Kirikae) of Japan.
