  • Look Inside

From the review of literatures, the palatine tonsils are thought to be ontogenetically and histologically, centrally lymphoid in nature but functionally to be peripheral. However, we shall not discuss gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GA-LT) including the tonsils with the thymus whichhas an intimate connection with the gut though being isolated from the latter ; although, its Hassel's corpuscles may be thought as a rudiment of the gut epithelium coming from the third branchial pouch.

I prefer to consider GALT including the tonsils as a specific immune organ in the attendance to a certain microbiological factor. Of course there is still a great difficulty in aligning the tonsils with the Fabricius sac of birds which is a humoral central immune organ, because the former is possessed with active antibody production capacity, which is peripheral in nature. Yet, we shall not consider the tonsils as an ordinary lymph node, one of the typical peripheral lymphoid organs which are derived from the mesenchymal tissues.

Therefore, considering from immunological standpoint, the tonsils and GALT are situated in a position between central and peripheral in nature.
