  • Look Inside

We have experienced two cases of postoperative palatine cyst, which falls in the range of the postoperative maxillary cyst.

The first case was a male, aged 37, who complained of a swelling of the right hard palate which occurred 14 years after the initial sinus operation. The second case was a male, aged 50, who also complained of a swelling of the right hard palate that occurred 8 years after the second operation of right sinuectomy.

The occurrence of postoperative palatine cyst is so rare that we were able to find only four similar cases reported in the literature of this country.

We arrived at the following conclusions on the pathogenesis of the postoperative palatine cysts. Our cases revealed an excellent pneumatization of the maxillary sinus towards inferiorly and medially reaching beneath nasal floor. In such a condition it is highly possible to leave some of the mucosa in the medial inferior parts of the sinus at the time of the previous operation, and the resulting cyst will easily extend toward the palate because of the thinness of the palatal process of the maxilla.
