  • Look Inside

Six cases of laryngeal tuberculosis that did not altogether conform to the classic description of this disease are reported. The ages of the patients ranged from 40 to 68.

The laryngeal lesions in most cases simulated that of carcinoma. Tumor formation with nodular appearances in the laryngeal mucosa were the most common showings in most recent cases. Since laryngeal tuberculosis has a tendency to be asymptomatic except hoarseness, tuberculosis must be suspected whenever the latter symptom is accompanied with the presence of non-specific laryngeal lesion.

To reach the diagnosis of laryngeal tuberculosis, the chest x-ray, sputum examination, personal and family histories will greatly enhance but, the final confirmation should rest with biopsy of the lesion.

The treatment consisted of employing antituberculous agents. streptomycin, isoniazid and PAS, with showings of apparent improvements in the tuberculous pathology.
