A case of thermal burn of the tympanic membrane is reported.

A boy, aged 14, while experimenting with explosive powder met an accidental explosion which caused a second degree burn of the face, upper part of the body and maiming of the right hand that, eventually, required an amputation at the wrist.

During the course of treatment and hospitalization the patient complained of tinnitus aurium of the right ear. Examination showed a large perforation of the tympanum that covered about 2/5 of its area. Because a part of the remaining portion of the membrane showed a darkened area the diagnosis of thermic-burn-perforation was made.

This perforation was covered over by a piece of paper for the period of one month; and, at the end of which time the perforation was found to be completely healed. At the final examination the patient showed the effects of some conduction deafness but there was no sign of vestibular disturbance.
