Eight cases of burns of the tympanic me-mbrane from the spattering sparks of electric welding seen at the Innoshima Hospital of Hiroshima Paefecture during the year 1957 are reported. These sparks consist of steel bits 0.1~1.5min in diameter heated to glowing temperature : three fifths of the number being found less than 0.3mm in diamter with larger ones being very rare. In most cases the burn was found in the anterior half of the tympanum. Burn of considerable area resulted in perma-nent perforation. For prevention of such a trauma an ear plug composed of minute wire mesh should be worn by the person concerned. The treatment should be. instituted early sup-plemented by use of antibiotics.
